RAM stands for random-access memory.
"Random-access" memory is somewhat of a misnomer, as it is better described as rewritable memory. In general, RAM needs power to retain content, so it is volatile memory, as opposed to Flash memory or ROM, which does not require power for data retention. Although RAM is a part of every computer system, technically, a small amount of work can be done just by the CPU using its internal memory (CPU registers) for temporary, but very limited, data storage.
