J-Trace USB recommendations
USB recommendations
Starting with J-Trace V2, all J-Trace probe versions feature a USB 3 interface. For the best tracing performance, SEGGER strongly recommends using USB 3 with J-Trace. Use the supplied USB 3 cable and connect the probe directly to a USB 3 port on the PC, avoiding USB hubs between the PC and the probe where possible.
Pin trace can generate a substantial amount of data. Trace data is sampled at high frequencies and streamed from the target to the PC, resulting in a high data throughput. A high-bandwidth connection is therefore important when streaming trace data.
If USB 3 is not an option, Ethernet should be used instead of USB 2.
USB 3 vs. USB 2
USB 3 SuperSpeed provides a theoretical signaling rate of 5 Gbit/s, while USB 3 SuperSpeed+ provides up to 10 Gbit/s. By comparison, USB 2.0 Hi-Speed has a maximum signaling rate of 480 Mbit/s.
USB 2 works for normal debug support without any limitations. However, for pin trace, USB 3 is recommended to provide sufficient bandwidth for the high volume of streaming trace data.
